Journey of Generosity

• 2 Corinthians 8:7 •

"But since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you, see that you also excel in this grace of giving."

Where did generosity begin? If God's love and grace is so freely given to us, we would say God is the author of generosity. In acknowledging what God has so generously given to us, one instruction we receive from the Bible is that a Tithe is a practice of returning what is God's.

Tithing in the Bible refers to the practice of giving a tenth of one's earnings or produce as an offering back to God. This concept is introduced early in the Old Testament and seen throughout the Bible demonstrating a way for believers to show their gratitude for God's blessings, support the work of the church, and help the poor and the Levites who served in the temple.

Leviticus 27:30: It states that a tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord and is holy to the Lord.

Numbers 18:21: This verse gives the Levites all the tithes in Israel as their inheritance in return for the work they do while serving at the tent of meeting.

Proverbs 3:9-10: It encourages believers to honor the Lord with their wealth and with the first fruits of all their crops, with the promise that their barns will be filled to overflowing.

In the New Testament, while there is no commandment for a legalistic tithe system, the principle of giving and generosity continues to be emphasized. In Matthew 23, we see Jesus talking on the points of justice, mercy and faithfulness, without "neglecting" the tithe. In 2 Corinthians 9:7 we read "Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."

Overall, tithing is seen as an act of faith, obedience, and worship, reflecting a believer's commitment to God's commands and the well-being of the community. A tithe is one way we honor God's instruction as we give faithfully and generously as He has given to us. Through our gifts of not just money, but of time and service as well, we are given the opportunity to partner with God and continue to spread the gospel. The most practical fruits we get the opportunity to observe is the changing of lives for those who accept Jesus, the launching of the church, loving our city, and leaving a legacy for those who shall follow.
